Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April 1972. She was raised by both her grandmother and mother. Scott is an all-only child. Scott attended Philadelphia High School for Girls. Upon graduation, Scott enrolled into Temple University. There, Scott worked two jobs as she was studying secondary education. She hoped to become a teacher of English in a secondary school. The dream of becoming an English teacher in high school was shattered when she dropped out of school. The path she took to her career started with a performance artist who spoke words who performed her work during poetry readings. Then she teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They ended up collaborating in writing You Got Me. In an Roots show she made her debut in the spotlight as an artist. She then secured collaborations, including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. Additionally, she was able to learn about performing arts through the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. Also, she was the first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
